Music and Us: Our New Playlist

Image
This class has been a great opportunity for me to be exposed to all kinds of music I probably never would've heard otherwise, and even if I would've heard it in the future, I would've had no idea where it came from, why it was created, or any of the other fascinating things I've learned about all the cultures we've studied. Although I don't have nearly as much time and access to primary resources as I would like to properly cover all these aspects of the pieces I have selected, I will cover what I do know or have found. I hope you enjoy these pieces as much as I have. My first selection is a traditional Ukrainian patriotic song which dates back to a WWI riflemen brigade. Since the recent(ish) invasion of Ukraine by Russia, this song has become a rallying cry for the people of Ukraine. The central image of the song is the viburnum, a white flower with red berries which has become a symbol of Ukraine representing both blood/war (through the red berries) and life...

Music and Family

I interviewed my dad about his experience with music since I've never actually asked him about his music. Here is the transcript of that interview: Me: What kind of experience with music did you have? Dad: Like currently or as a kid? Me: Just throughout your life. Dad: What kind of experience do I have on music? Me: I guess did you?  Dad: Not really Me: What was your favorite kind of music growing up? Dad: OK, I like your country music or classic rock. Like 70s rock, 60s. Me: Was the same throughout your life, or did it ever change at any point? Dad: I guess it may be changed a little because I like most all music other than Hard rap music. Me: Was there any particular and the song, album, or group that you really enjoyed or you know you had any particular attachment to? Even just for a short period of time or a longer time. Dad: I don't know that I have a favorite, but I like my Jimmy Buffett/beach kind of music, or I don't know of a favorite country group. Me: Yeah (Mom s...

Music and Traditions

As someone who has been making music more nearly all of my life, I have shockingly few specific traditions and rituals associated with particular songs, but there is at least one that I remember and still participate in. One of the traditions that still sticks with me connects to my high school choir. I went to Cane Bay High School, and every year, during the final concert of the year, we would perform Billy Joel's "Lullaby." Specifically, my choir would sing the King's Singers arrangement:   Additionally, there are a few other parts to this tradition. Before this song is performed, any Alumni of the school who were ever part of the choir are invited onto the stage to sing alongside the rest of the choir. This is an opportunity for alumni to sing alongside their former classmates and current choir members they may have known during their time. As well as serving as an alumni reunion song, this is also used as a senior send-off song. As the alumni make th...

Music and Me

Hey guys! My name is Noah Lipari, and I am a Sophomore Deaf Ed major with a minor in music. I have been singing for as long as I can remember, and I plan to keep singing as long as I can even if it isn’t my career.     My dad was in the Army for 21 years, so I have lived in a wide variety of places. I was born in Germany and have lived in Alabama, Virginia, Florida, Washington, and North Carolina, but for the past 7 years, I have called Summerville, South Carolina home. 1. Current Musical Interest       The King's Singers - As a primarily choral singer, I have always had a soft spot for acapella music in both the modern, pentatonix style and the more traditional, harmonically-based style. One of my favorite groups for the latter kind is the King's Singers. Somewhat recently (this past summer), they released an album that has been my go to spotify pick whenever I want to get lost in some harmonic music or I need to put something on ...
